ILOILO – The Parish of St. Thomas of Villanova in Alimodian town organized a display of memorabilia and curated exhibit comprising items owned by private individuals to pay tribute to the legacy of the late Pope Francis.
The memorabilia includes a rosary personally sent by Pope Francis to a parishioner, certificates of papal blessings, and a collection of magazines featuring the Pope’s life as an ordinary citizen, modest beginnings as an Argentinian priest, and as Bishop of Rome.
The parish invites locals and visitors to pray in the church during designated hours for the soul and eternal repose of the Pope, providing a reflective space to honor Pope Francis’ impactful papacy, in which they can light candles, pray a rosary, and send floral homage. The display opened on April 23 and will last until Sunday, April 27.
In reflecting on the profound contributions of Pope Francis, the Archdiocese of Jaro has shared its support in a statement:
“This unique and moving display not only honors Pope Francis’ legacy, but also serves as a space for reflection on the values he lived by: simplicity, mercy, and service to the poor,” the Archdiocese of Jaro said.
Gov. Arthur Defensor Jr., meanwhile, expressed his grief on the passing of the Pope and his holiness.
“With deep sorrow, we join the global Catholic community in mourning the passing of His Holiness Pope Francis, a humble servant of God whose life was dedicated to compassion, mercy, and justice. Pope Francis was a shepherd to the world – a voice for the poor, the marginalized, and the forgotten. His deep concern for the environment, his call for peace, and his unwavering commitment to the dignity of every human being have left an indelible mark on our hearts and the history of the church,” he said.
Ilonggos and church communities conjoined to honor a shepherd whose life reflects humility and compassion, while also expressing gratitude for the significant impact Pope Francis has had and the lasting legacy of his love.
The Vatican earlier released a report on the death of the 88-year-old Pope Francis due to stroke, causing a coma and “irreversible” heart failure on April 21, 2025, in his residence at Casa Santa Marta in the Vatican./PN
