An expensive peace?

EVERYONE wants to live in peace but sometimes there is a cost for a peaceful home.

In the fictional world on TV with the wonderful series “The Sopranos” and a number of gangster movies, the cost of peace might be a 10 or 20 percent of your money. There are criminals with corrupt officials helping them.

In the real world, Russia wants more than 100 percent of the Ukraine territory they have already spread into. There are criminals here as well but are corrupt, or maybe incompetent, officials helping them too?

Bullies should never win. Good people must stand up to them.

Plugged in winners

The Robot Humanoid Olympics are on in China over the weekend with hundreds of teams from 16 countries.

There are many of the usual sports including track and field, football, table tennis, but also speed medicine sorting and cleaning services.

Finally, I might have a chance for an Olympic medal, maybe in the medicine sorting events.

The last real Olympics showed how wide the definition of “sport” has become with the introduction of “break dancing” and “skate boarding” although the traditional events were still there.

At least the 1900 event “Live Pigeon Shooting” hasn’t returned to the Olympics.

I might be out of date but I prefer the old sports. I’d rather see a person competing, not a person with a keyboard competing.

No surprise

United States President Donald Trump’s statement from the Anchorage Summit, “There’s no deal until there’s a deal” will eventually be updated to “There’s no deal” after any further meetings.

There were many suggesting that Russian leader Vladimir Putin wasn’t sincere and this was just a delaying technique. At least he got a free meal.

This, and the Middle East wars are shameful, destructive, and basically the result of a leader’s political policies and ego.

Maybe divine intervention from the new Pope might help, or the boss upstairs will have a housing problem from all the innocent people, including children who are killed.

Toys are for children, not the childish

A public warning has gone out that fake Labubu dolls might be dangerous with choking risks for children although all I have seen on TV is adults clamoring to buy them.

Why is anyone surprised that fake dolls might be poorly made and thus could fall apart?

Being fake isn’t dangerous by itself as we have not seen many deaths by faked Vuitton, Prada, Gucci, or Chanel handbags. But who knows what the future holds?

What might also be fake is the value for money as the dolls, real or fake, are just the latest fad toy that everyone must follow until they eventually end up in the bottom drawer or the family pet chews them.

Did anyone else spend too much money on a Pet Rocks or a now long dead Tamagotchi, some Cabbage Patch Kids, or even a yo-yo? The only worthwhile one was the Rubik’s Cube, still occasionally tried and failed.

If you have more money than sense, please give it to a charity. (dennis.fitzgerald.letters@gmail.com)/PN
