ILOILO City – All the hype and excitement has been building up to today, when the contention of collegiate rivals Ateneo Lady Eagles and De La Salle University Lady Spikers comes to paint Iloilo blue and green when they face-off at the Iloilo Sports Complex at 6 p.m.
“Let’s make some noise volleyball fans! All is set for this blue versus green collision,” shared sportsman Ruding Villaruz, one of the organizers of the highly-anticipated event.
The Ateneo Lady Eagles are set to be bannered by “Iron Eagle” Denden Lazaro, UAAP Season 77 Finals MVP Amy Ahomiro, Mae Tajima, and Charo Soriano.
Meanwhile, La Salle Lady Spikers Michele Gumabao and Aby Maraño are joined by former National University Lady Bulldogs star Myla Pablo.
The event is also expected to be a homecoming of sorts for Ilonggas Maraño (who traces her roots from Passi City) and Jovelyn Gonzaga (a proud product of Central Philippine University), who is set to reinforce Team La Salle.
Also confirmed for the Iloilo clash of the UAAP archrivals are La Salle volley belle Mika Reyes, as well as PLDT Home Ultera ambassadors Jaja Santiago, Dindin Santiago-Manabat, Rachel Daquis, and College of St. Benilde cager Johnvic De Guzman.
Game time for the Ateneo-La Salle clash is at 6 p.m., but preliminary playoffs featuring local teams start 1 p.m. The Ateneo de Iloilo elementary volleyball team is slated to kick off the friendly competition against Assumption Iloilo, to be followed by the Colegio de las Hijas de Jesus and St. Joseph School elementary girls’ matchup at 2 p.m.
The secondary girls’ volleyball matches start at 3 p.m. with St. Joseph School squaring off with Assumption Iloilo and St. Scholastica’s Academy of Bacolod facing Ateneo de Iloilo at 4 p.m.
Aside from the court clash, the respected spikers are going to conduct a volleyball clinic on the morning of Jan. 7 for 50 elementary and 50 secondary students at the Ateneo de Iloilo Gym, as part of the city’s grassroots sports program.
General Admission tickets will be available at the Iloilo Sports Complex today, confirmed the organizers of the event.
Part of the proceeds from the event will go to the Psychiatry Department of the West Visayas State University Medical Center./PN
