ILOILO City – A 44-year-old woman was arrested for abducting a baby boy from a hospital here.

Emelyn Castillo of Zone 12, Barangay Calumpang, Arevalo district was nabbed on Tuesday evening in Barangay Burgos, La Paz.

On August 8, she took a 16-month-old baby from its 17-year-old mother at the Western Visayas Medical Center (WVMC) in Mandurriao district.

Castillo was arrested by personnel of the Iloilo City Police Office (ICPO).

According to ICPO spokesperson, Superintendent Gilbert Gorero, Castillo recently contacted the mother of the boy that she was in La Paz and that she was planning to return the baby on August 26.

“After the suspect turned over the baby boy to the mother, we immediately arrested her,” Gorero said.

On August 8, Castillo, who claimed she was a member of militant women’s group Gabriela, went to WVMC where the child’s mother was confined and convinced her that the militant women’s group was willing to lend financial help.

The mother was persuaded and turned over her baby boy to Castillo. But she got alarmed when Castillo never returned.

Security guards failed to spot Castillo leaving the hospital with the baby.

Gabriela, meanwhile, denied that Castillo was a member./PN
