BACOLOD City – Two minor siblings died while their grandfather was injured when a fire engulfed their home early yesterday morning in Purok Lison, Barangay 1 in this city.
The charred bodies of a six-year-old boy and an eight-year-old girl were discovered after firefighters extinguished the blaze, according to the Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP)-Bacolod City.
The siblings were trapped inside their room and unable to escape as the fire had already consumed the only accessible door.
Authorities said the kids’ parents were not at home when the fire broke out.
According to Fire Officer II Rolin Paulan of the BFP-Bacolod City, the grandfather, Edwardo Gutierrez, 63, suffered burns while attempting to rescue his grandchildren.
He said the house was made of light materials and has no secondary exit. Property damage was pegged at P3,000.
The BFP-Bacolod City said the fire may have been cause by an unattended lighted candle. Investigation was ongoing as of this writing.
Meanwhile, Barangay Captain Cesar Rallos said the fire started past 2 a.m. after a power interruption./PN
