BACOLOD City – Bacolod Tay Tung High School Thunderbolts-A emerged as champions in the Ready Set Go Calvary Sports Mini Volleyball 4-a-side tournament held over the weekend at the Pontevedra Gymnasium in Pontevedra, Negros Occidental.
The Roberto Calamba-mentored Thunderbolts-A captured the crown in the one-day volleyball tournament after defeating the Down The Line Volleyball Club in the gold medal round.
Mary Regine Wong Yan was named Most Valuable Player, Czarina Aleksi Ang took the Best Setter award and Edrianna Kaye Escultura and Mari Antoinette Cacho were Best Server and Best Blocker, respectively.
According to Calamba, it was a great achievement for his 11-under Thunderbolts team to rule the 4-a-side volleyball tournament where only four players are on the court during the game.
“Playing consecutive games in a day is not that easy and I am happy that these four players were able to withstand the challenge,” Calamba said. “It was tiring because there were only four players who were playing at the same time, unlike the traditional way.”
During the preliminary round, the Thunderbolts-A prevailed over Mandalagan Elementary School, Calvary, Cbapi-1, Cbapi-2 and Trinity-A before tasting their lone defeat to Down The Line.
Down The Line’s Kirstie Gulmatico and Chinnie Millama also received individual citations as they were named as Best Attacker and Best Receiver, respectively.
The Thunderbolts-B of Sheree Frederiz Uy, Annicka Zoe Chua, Jillian Madi Jabatan, Zoe Francine Espiritu and Fate Samantha Jalando-on salvaged a bronze medal finish, while CBAPI ended at fourth place.
Meanwhile, Calvary Baptist Academy of Pontevedra Inc.-A took home the championship in the boys division after beating Mandalagan Elementary School-A in the gold medal match.
Mandalagan Elementary School-B, on the other hand, secured a second runner-up finish while Calvary Baptist Academy of Pontevedra Inc.-B ended at fourth place./PN
