ILOILO – The Bailey bridge built in Barangay Oyungan, Miag-ao town may be used by motorists for a year, said Mayor Richard Garin yesterday.
For light vehicles to cross, the bridge was installed after the Oyungan bridge was damaged when Severe Tropical Storm “Paeng” struck on Oct. 28.
In an interview with Panay News, Garin said the Bailey bridge is only a temporary solution.
According to the mayor, it is not yet known when the new bridge will be built because there are no funds available.
“Sobra pa ni guro isa ka tuig, matapos ini kung may bag-o na kita nga taytay pero sa subong wala pa kita pondo,” he said.
The estimated budget for a new bridge is P100 million.
Garin said only a maximum of 10 tons can cross the Bailey bridge at a time.
A minimum of 10 people from the Municipal Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office, Philippine National Police, Department of Public Works and Highways, barangay tanods of other barangays, and volunteers guard the bridge 24/7.
The municipal government will also provide a detour road downstream for large vehicles./PN
