MANILA – Originally scheduled on Sept. 23-29, the Visayas qualifying leg of the 2017 Batang Pinoy has been rescheduled to Nov. 10-16, the Philippine Sports Commission (PSC) announced.

Dumaguete City will still be the official venue, the PSC said.

PSC head William Ramirez and Dumaguete City mayor Ipe Remollo signed a memorandum of agreement to formalize the hosting.

“We are very happy, and we will continue to support Dumaguete not only during the Batang Pinoy,” said Ramirez. “Just like in the previous editions, the PSC will provide competition equipment, logistics, technical expertise, and funding.”

“Dumaguete City will take care of the accommodation of the delegates, security, local transport, and medical personnel,” said Remollo. “The event should also help the LGU (local government unit) lead the youth away from illegal drugs.”
Batang Pinoy is a national competition program for children 17 years old and below. It involves 18 disciplines, with athletics, badminton, boxing, basketball, swimming, tennis, and taekwondo as marquee events.

“This grassroots-based sport undertaking aims to widen the base to select potential athletes for future national and international sports competitions, primarily the quadrennial Youth Olympic Games,” Ramirez said.

“It is also in line with the commitment of the PSC to develop and promote sports by encouraging sports programs to foster self-discipline, teamwork and excellence for the development of a healthy citizenry,” he added.

The deadline for substitution of athletes is on Sept. 4. Additional entries will no longer be accepted after that, the Batang Pinoy National Secretariat said.

After the Visayas leg, Batang Pinoy action will shift to Luzon in Vigan City, Ilocos Sur on Oct. 22-28. The venue for the Mindanao leg was still being finalized. (With a report from Adrian Stewart Co/PN)
