MANILA – San Miguel Beermen became the first team to get into the semifinals of the 2017 Oppo PBA Commissioner’s Cup after routing Phoenix Fuel Masters, 115-96, in their quarterfinals match on Tuesday at the Smart-Araneta Coliseum.
Marcio Lassiter led the way with 26 points, including five three-point conversions, for Beermen, which needed only one game to dispose Fuel Masters due to its twice-to-beat incentive.
Next up for San Miguel is a face-off with whoever wins between Star Hotshots and Rain or Shine Elasto Painters.
Alex Cabagnot and June Mar Fajardo added 20 and 15 markers, respectively, while Ilonggo Ronald Tubid and Charles Rhodes had 14 points each for Beermen.
After Fuel Masters scored the first four points, Beermen went on a huge scoring run behind triples by Lassiter, Cabagnot and Chris Ross to build a 26-16 advantage.
Beermen continued with its run in the second frame with conversions from Fajardo, Rhodes and Tubid to build its largest lead at 51-23 on a Cabagnot triple. Fuel Masters got some late hits from Angelo Alolino to trim the deficit to 57-37 at the half.
San Miguel had a strong start in the third to maintain a 24-point lead but Phoenix rallied to within 15 points. Beermen managed to pull away anew on hits by Santos, Tubid and Lassiter to bring the lead up to 88-67.
Fuel Masters made its last run in the fourth to come to as close as 14 points but three-pointers by Cabagnot followed by inside conversions from Fajardo increased the lead to 110-87.
Reinforcement Jameel McKay finished with double-double 20 points and 13 rebounds, while RJ Jazul added 17 markers for Fuel Masters, which became the fifth team to be eliminated this conference./PN
