BACOLOD City – The Bacolod Environment and Natural Resources Office (BENRO) is calling on the public to donate any leftover seeds they may have at home to support the city’s environmental initiatives.
BENRO head Ma. Fe Tresfuentes urged residents to bring or send their seed donations to the BENRO office every Tuesday and Friday.
The collected seeds will be used for the National Arbor Day celebration on June 25, which forms part of the city’s activities for Environment Month this June.
Tresfuentes shared that Barangay Estefania has already responded to the call and donated seeds, which are now being prepared through bagging.
This project is part of the city’s collective efforts to strengthen environmental consciousness and community participation during Environment Month.
Earlier on June 14, BENRO successfully conducted a coastal clean-up drive, which drew more than 1,500 volunteers from various sectors of society.
“In a powerful display of unity and environmental commitment, our recent coastal clean-up activity was held across three coastal sites in Bacolod: Purok Mahimulaton in Barangay Banago; Purok Sigay and Sisi in Barangay Singcang-Airport; and Blackbird Resort in Barangay Punta Taytay,” Tresfuentes said.
Volunteers from multi-sectoral partners came together in a shared effort to restore and protect the city’s coastlines.
The clean-up yielded an estimated 14.7 tons of coastal and wastewater trash, reflecting the seriousness of environmental challenges faced by the city.
Tresfuentes emphasized that the success of the activity is a testament to the power of community collaboration:
“Our collective effort is a strong reminder that when a community works together, real change happens.”
To cap off Environment Month, a tree bagging, tree caring, and tree planting activity will be held on June 25 at the landfill ecopark in Barangay Felisa./PN
