‘Ber’ months usher in Yuletide mood across WV

ILOILO City – Christmas has officially begun in Western Visayas as September 1 marks the start of the “ber” months, with festive songs and colorful decorations beginning to take over some homes, streets, and markets across the region.

Even with Christmas still three months away, Ilonggos are wasting no time in welcoming the season. Popular holiday tunes — from the classics of Jose Mari Chan to the anthems of Mariah Carey — have started to echo through some shopping malls, public plazas, and residential neighborhoods, setting the soundtrack for the longest Christmas celebration in the world.

Markets are also gearing up for the rush, with vendors hoping to cash in on parols (lanterns) and native holiday delicacies such the bingka outside churches and crowded plazas.

Malls and stores are expected to see a surge of shoppers hunting for early gifts and decorations to brighten their homes.

During the “ber” months, the glow of parols, the aroma of festive foods, and the sound of children’s carols bring a mix of nostalgia and anticipation.

Communities are likewise preparing cultural and religious activities that highlight togetherness, faith, and generosity — the hallmarks of the Filipino Christmas spirit./PN
