ILOILO City – In the wake of Saturday’s fire in Zone 3, Barangay Salvacion Habog-Habog, Molo district, the Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP) Region 6 is urging the public to enhance their fire safety awareness.

One way to do this is for households to display fire safety reminders in fire-prone areas of homes such as kitchens, according to Chief Superintendent Jerry Candido, BFP-6 director.

“For example, ‘do not leave the kitchen without ensuring the LPG regulator is off,’” said Candido.

Even a simple reminder can make a difference, he stressed.

“The purpose is to psychologically register the message, thus awakening our fire consciousness. Being alert to fire hazards can prevent negligence, a common cause of fires,” explained Candido.

Emphasizing the importance of fire consciousness, especially during the holiday season, Candido noted the increase in parties and the Filipino tradition of celebrating the New Year with firecrackers and fireworks.

The use of kitchens for cooking and appliances becomes more frequent, alongside prevalent smoking habits, raising fire risks, he added.

Aside from ensuring that the LPG regulator is off, also make sure that no embers or flames are left in the kitchen, said Candido.

As for outdoor cooking, this should be supervised and not neglected, he added.

Also, when using appliances during parties, it’s crucial to check electrical connections to prevent short circuits, stressed Candido.

The BFP-6 chief also said homes should have their main switch turned off when unoccupied.

As for smokers, he advised them not to smoke inside the house, particularly after consuming alcohol, to avoid accidental fire from cigarette butts.

In case of fire, Candido said, the BFP should immediately be alerted.

He noted that too often, people from distant areas call the BFP instead of those directly affected by the fire.

“Every minute is crucial in combating a fire,” stressed Candido./PN
