MANILA – Carlo Biado of the Philippines captured the men’s 9-ball billiards championship in the World Games, beating Jayson Shaw of Great Britain 11-7 on Saturday in Wroclaw, Poland (Sunday in Manila).
Biado managed an early lead in the finale at the Wroclaw Congress Hall before thwarting Shaw’s runs to clinch the Philippines’ first-ever medal in the prestigious global competition of non-Olympic sports.
This achievement of Biado eclipsed that of Dennis Orcollo, who bagged a bronze medal in the 2014 edition in Cali, Columbia.
Before heading into the finals, the 33-year-old Biado beat Joshua Filler of Germany (11-5) in the round-of-16, Mieszko Fortunski of Poland (11-9) in the quarterfinals and Naoyuki Oi of Japan (11-7) in the semifinals.
Meanwhile, Chezka Centeno of the Philippines settled for fourth place in the women’s 9-ball event, losing to Han Yu of China (9-3) in the bronze-medal game. She lost to Siming Chen of China in the semifinals (9-6).
Centeno started her campaign in the tournament with a victory over Molrudee Kasemchaiyanan of New Zealand in the round-of-16 (9-2) and a 9-8 escape over Chinese-Taipei’s Chieh Yu Chou in the quarterfinals.
Moreover, Philip Delarmino – a native of Dumangas, Iloilo – failed to advance in the men’s 57kg muay thai event after losing to Almaz Sarsembekov of Kazakhstan 30-27 in the quarterfinals.
The Philippines’ Aya Paz Cojuangco also failed to bag a medal in archery after losing to Cassidy Cox of the United States in the quarterfinals (145-140). She won her first match over Amelie Sancenot of France (144-140)./PN
