BUENAVISTA, Guimaras – The municipal government here allocated P3.5 million for the procurement of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) vaccines.

Mayor Eugenio Reyes told Panay News the local government units of Jordan, San Lorenzo, Sibunag, and Nueva Valencia would also be setting aside funds for their COVID-19 vaccines as agreed during a recent meeting of the League of Municipalities of the Philippines – Guimaras with Gov. Samuel Gumarin and Cong. Lucille Nava.

The goal is for each local government unit to vaccinate at least 10 percent of their respective populations.

In Buenavista, however, the local government aims to initially vaccinate 10 percent of its 35,000 registered voters, said Reyes. This is equivalent to some 3,500 people.

The town’s actual population is around 50,000.

Priorities for vaccination are frontliners like healthcare workers, barangay officials, barangay tanods, barangay volunteers, senior citizens, and persons with comorbidities.

Reyes said his municipal government is also kicking off an information and education campaign on the importance of vaccination.

Meanwhile, the provincial government has also allotted P70 million for COVID-19 vaccines.

As of Feb. 2, Guimaras’ cumulative cases of COVID-19 (since recording started in March 2020) hit 265 with four deaths.

But with 252 cases having recovered from the illness, the island province’s active cases as of Feb. 2 stood at only 10.

Seven of the active cases were in Buenavista, two in Jordan and one in Nueva Valencia./PN
