BACOLOD City – The Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Team (DRRMT) of Cadiz City in Negros Occidental has extended its assistance to the La Carlota City Government following the eruption of Mount Kanlaon on May 13.
Cadiz swiftly mobilized its water tanker for a flushing operation to clear ashfall debris along key roads leading to Barangay Yubo in La Carlota.
Beyond the flushing operation, Cadiz’s DRRMT is also assisting in addressing the potable water needs of the affected residents by sending a water filtration truck to the area on a regular basis.
Reports indicate that other nearby localities, including Bago City, La Castellana, Pontevedra, and San Enrique, were also affected by ashfall. Even Bacolod City experienced volcanic ash particles carried by rainfall.
Cadiz City continues to demonstrate compassion, optimism, and solidarity in the face of crisis. This spirit has become part of the city’s new mantra – “Culture of compassion and mindset for excellence” — a message that Cadiz aims to instill in the minds of all Cadizeños.
In light of the recent Kanlaon eruption, Cadiz City’s Mayor Salvador Escalante Jr. expressed that the city’s response, while simple, is significant.
“This is just a simple act, but it matters amid calamity,” he said.
He added: “We want Cadiz to always be ready to help in any emergency or calamity, whether it’s here or elsewhere. We want to help. We want to save lives.”
The mayor emphasized that seeing the DRRMT in action during a crisis is both heartwarming and inspiring.
“It’s more than just a story — it’s a significant narrative of helping a community and saving lives,” he stressed.
He also pointed out that the actions of the DRRMT go beyond compassion: “It signifies our commitment to supporting other local government units in distress.”/PN
