ILOILO City –The provincial government may enter its teen center program to the Galing Pook Award.

The Galing Pook Award was launched on Oct. 21 1993 to recognize excellent local government programs and projects.

Teen centers promote values formation and responsible reproductive health. One of its objectives is to curb teenage pregnancy.

Thursday last week, the Provincial Population Office launched the “search for the most outstanding school-based multipurpose teen center. It aims to evaluate the effectiveness of teen centers in the lives of students and out-of-school youth.

Iloilo has already established 15 teen centers worth P4 million in various public high schools. These schools are:

  • Oton National High School
  • Pavia National High School
  • Lambunao National High School
  • Rufino G. Palabrica Sr. National High School
  • Nicomedes R. Tubas Sr. National High School
  • Igbaras National High School
  • Leonora Salapantan National High School
  • Cabatuan National Comprehensive High School
  • Dumangas National High School, and
  • Sara National High School.

Fourteen more teen centers are set to rise by the end of 2014, said Gov. Arthur Defensor Sr.

“For this program to win the Galing Pook Award, it should be measured in terms of economic and other benefits,” said Provincial Administrator Raul Banias.

Population Commission (PopCom) executive director Juan Antonio Perez III lauded Iloilo as “most advanced” in terms of youth development programs during a recent visit here./PN
