CAPIZ – In a move to enhance the province’s agri-fishery sector, Department of Agriculture (DA) Assistant Secretary for Logistics Daniel Atayde paid a courtesy visit to Gov. Fredenil H. Castro on Wednesday, May 14, to discuss the alignment of national and local government initiatives.
A key highlight of the meeting was the proposal for the construction of a modern ice plant and cold storage facility, aimed at strengthening the local fishing industry in Capiz.
The planned facility is expected to provide vital post-harvest support to local fisherfolk by ensuring that seafood products are preserved at optimal temperatures. This initiative seeks to minimize spoilage, maintain product quality, and extend the marketability of fish and other marine resources — ultimately reducing post-harvest losses and boosting incomes in fishing communities.
This agri-fishery project is a long-term investment in the lives and livelihoods of Capisnon fisherfolk. It reflects DA’s commitment to delivering infrastructure that supports both food security and economic growth.
Gov. Castro welcomed the initiative, expressing gratitude to the DA for prioritizing projects that directly address the needs of grassroots sectors.
“I fully commit the support of the provincial government to ensure the success of this project,” Castro affirmed.
Also in attendance were Joey dela Cruz, representing the Provincial Agriculturist’s Office, and Rio Garcia, head of the Provincial Economic Development and Investment Promotion Office (PEDIPO).
The collaboration between the DA and the provincial government is expected to pave the way for more strategic and sustainable agricultural and fishery development programs across Capiz./PN
