CAPIZ – As Tropical Storm “Ramil” (international name: Fengshen), the Philippines’ 18th tropical cyclone of 2025, batters parts of Luzon and the Visayas, the Capiz Provincial Government (CPG) and the Department of Social Welfare and Development Region 6 (DSWD-6) have stepped up efforts to protect residents’ health and provide immediate relief to affected communities.
On October 18, the CPG, through the Provincial Health Office (PHO), issued a public health advisory warning of the risks posed by prolonged exposure to contaminated floodwaters. According to the advisory, floodwaters can increase the likelihood of waterborne and infectious diseases such as leptospirosis, acute gastroenteritis, and skin infections.
Individuals who waded in floodwaters, especially those with cuts or wounds, are considered high-risk and are urged to seek post-exposure prophylaxis against leptospirosis, available for free at the nearest health facility. The PHO also reminded residents to avoid self-medication, wear protective gear if wading is unavoidable, wash thoroughly after exposure, and ensure safe drinking water.
“The CPG calls on all Capisnons to remain calm, cautious, and proactive in safeguarding their health during this weather situation,” the advisory reads.
Meanwhile, DSWD-6 has mobilized P85 million worth of relief resources for immediate distribution to communities affected by flooding. The relief packages include Family Food Packs, essential non-food items, and ready-to-eat food, prioritizing families stranded in Roxas City and other flood-hit areas.
OIC Regional Director Joselito G. Estember is coordinating with Provincial Quick Response Teams (PQRTs) across Western Visayas to ensure timely delivery of assistance. Assistant Regional Director for Operations Katherine Joy Lamprea has been visiting evacuation centers, including Barangay Banica and homes for the aged, to personally monitor the welfare of internally displaced persons (IDPs) and facilitate the provision of essential support.
DSWD officials are also working closely with local authorities in Barangay Loctugan and other affected areas to assess the needs of displaced families and ensure that relief reaches the most vulnerable.
The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical, and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) has advised the public to remain alert for potential floods, landslides, and storm surges as TS “Ramil” continues to affect the region.
“No family will be left behind during this challenging time,” Lamprea said, emphasizing the agency’s commitment to continuous monitoring and disaster response in collaboration with local government units./PN
