Capiz records over 1,000 dengue cases, four deaths

CAPIZ – The Provincial Health Office (PHO) here has reported a total of 1,017 dengue cases and four deaths in the province as of the 32nd morbidity week, covering the period from January 1 to August 9.

Nineteen new cases were recorded in the most recent week alone, underscoring the continued threat of the mosquito-borne disease.

While the figure remains alarming, health officials noted a 37.26 percent decrease compared to the same period last year, when 1,621 cases were documented. The PHO said the decline is encouraging but stressed that prevention and vigilance remain crucial.

“We urge the public to eliminate mosquito breeding sites, use repellents, and seek medical care at the first sign of symptoms,” the PHO said.

Here is the breakdown of dengue cases across the province: Cuartero with 28 cases; Dao, 42; Dumalag, 41; Dumarao, 53; Ivisan, 22; Jamindan, 60; Ma-ayon, 20; Mambusao, 45; Panay, 66; Panitan, 36; Pilar, 21; Pontevedra, 38; President Roxas, 18; Roxas City, 360; Sapi-an, 18; Sigma, 33; and Tapaz, 116.

Several barangays have also been tagged as dengue hotspots due to clustering of cases. These include barangays Codingle and San Juan in Dumarao; Barangay San Miguel in Dumalag; and Banica, Barra, Bato, Baybay, Cagay, Culasi, Dayao, Dumulog, Lawa-an, Sibaguan, and Tiza in Roxas City.

To address the rising cases, the PHO has stepped up its “5S Kontra Lamok” campaign in coordination with the provincial government. The initiative highlights five key strategies against dengue: search and destroy breeding sites, practice self-protection measures, seek early medical consultation, support fogging operations in hotspot areas, and maintain adequate hydration.

The PHO urged Capiznons to remain vigilant and work together in keeping surroundings clean to curb the spread of the disease./PN
