MANILA – With the return of Vincent “Chot” Reyes as Gilas Pilipinas head coach, TNT Katropa star guard Jayson Castro has become open to the possibility of unretiring from national team duties.
Castro’s player agent Danny Espiritu said the veteran cager is willing to take the call if he’ll be among the 24 PBA players set to be invited to join the national team’s roster.
“Natanong ko sakanya kamakailan lang since nagbalik na si coach Chot sa Gilas, sabi niya sakaling maimbitahan siya (sumali sa Gilas) ay hindi niya tatanggihan,” said Espiritu.
The Bacolor, Pampanga-native Castro has played with the Gilas for three years. He was first named the Best Point Guard of Asia during the 2013 FIBA-Asia Championships held in Manila.
Castro was also part of the Gilas squad that competed in the 2014 FIBA World Cup in Madrid, Spain. He also played for the national men’s basketball team for the Asian Games in Korea that year.
Castro, a two-time PBA Best Player of the Conference awardee, also donned the country’s colors for the 2015 FIBA Asia Championship in Changsha, China where he was once again cited as the Best Point Guard of Asia.
Reyes said that 2017 will be a busy year for the Gilas team as they will compete in the Southeast Asian Basketball Association (SEABA) tournament, the FIBA-Asia Championship, Jones Cup, SEA Games and the 2019 FIBA World Cup qualifier.
“We have to win the 2017 SEABA tournament convincingly as we’re not a shoo-in in FIBA-Asia Championship. So 2017 is a fun year for us. There’s a lot to be look forward to,” said Reyes./PN
