MANILA – Ceres Negros moved closer to the top spot of the Philippines Football League with a 5-1 victory over Ilocos United at the Quirino Stadium in Ilocos Sur.

Patrick Reichelt and Bienvenido MaraƱon registered two goals apiece while Kevin Ingreso scored another on Tuesday night for Ceres Negros, which bounced back from a 1-1 draw with Ilocos on Saturday evening.

Ceres was aggressive early on offense with attempts from Ramsay, Reichelt, and MaraƱon but did not hit the mark. The Negrenses broke the deadlock midway in the first half as Reichelt redirected a MaraƱon cross for the opening goal.

Early in the second half Ceres doubled the lead with another combination from MaraƱon and Reichelt. Ilocos United reduced the lead in the next possession with a hit by Chima Uzoka.

But that proved to be the last stand of the Ilocanos as Ceres padded the difference to four, with Ingreso draining his own miss shot and MaraƱon drilling back-to-back hits from passes by Iain Ramsay and Reichelt.

ā€œIt was a very tough game because, if you think about it, we were playing for nothing,ā€ said Ceres Negros head coach Risto Vidakovic. ā€œWe’re just playing to reach the 28 games. It’s a big problem to play these games.ā€

Ceres stayed on second place in the standings with 56 points – 17 wins, five draws and four losses – while Ilocos United ended its campaign with 9 points.

The Negros team can shoot for the top spot when it faces No. 1 Meralco Manila (57 points on 17 wins, six draws and four losses) on Friday afternoon at the PFF National Training Center in Carmona, Cavite./PN
