ILOILO City – “Very reasonable” was how the Commission on Higher Education (CHED) described the increase in tuition and/or other school fees of 10 higher education institutions (HEIs) in Western Visayas.

According to Dr. Rex Casiple, chief education program specialist of CHED Region 6, the 10 schools complied with the requirement to align their increase with the 1.8 percent inflation rate in the region. These schools were as follows:

* Hercor College (Roxas City)

* Interface Computer College (Iloilo City)

* John B. Lacson Foundation Maritime University-Molo (Iloilo City)

* John B. Lacson Maritime University-Arevalo (Iloilo City)

* Iloilo Doctors’ College (Iloilo City)

* Iloilo Doctors’ College of Medicine (Iloilo City)

* St. Therese MTC Colleges-La Fiesta (Iloilo City)

* St. Therese MTC Colleges-Magdalo (Iloilo City)

* St. Therese MTC Colleges-Tigbauan ((Iloilo)

* University of Iloilo (Iloilo City)

The University of Iloilo only sought to increase its tuition while the Iloilo Doctors’ College of Medicine will only increase its other school fees.

Casiple said the increase was “very reasonable” because schools in other regions, aside from the inflation rate, also considered the capabilities of the students to pay, of the school to operate, and track record of the school.

Those that applied for higher than the 1.8 percent are autonomous schools. One of the reasons for the increase is to increase the salary of their teachers.

“We noted an exodus of teachers from private schools to state universities and colleges,” said Casiple.

Professors from state universities and colleges command higher salaries when compared with those in private schools.

CHED, meanwhile, submitted to its central office the appeal for the increase of six other schools. The applications of five others, however, were not endorsed due to several violations.

Casiple is advising students enrolled in state universities and colleges (SUCs) to inquire from their respective schools to know the requirements to avail of the government’s Free Tuition 2017 program.

“We are waiting for the final (order). According to our director (Dr. Cesar Medina) we will conduct an orientation together with the Unified Financial Assistance for Students. They will be the one to orient SUCs about this,” he said. (PNA)
