MANILA – Legendary woodpusher Eugene Torre will return home to Iloilo to lead activities aimed at discovering young Ilonggo chess players.
Torre will start his three-day visit with a caravan from the Iloilo Airport to the Iloilo provincial capitol at 9 a.m. on Aug. 4. A chess exhibition will follow at 1 p.m. at SM City Iloilo, according to the Iloilo Provincial Chess Association (IPCA).
The next day, Asia’s first grandmaster will hold a trainer’s seminar and sign memorabilia at the National Economic and Development Authority Region 6.
Another chess exhibition on Aug. 6 will cap off Torre’s visit.
Torre will also be given a plaque of recognition by Iloilo provincial government officials and other local government units for his achievements in representing the Philippines in various tournaments.
Torre, 65, became Asia’s first grandmaster at 22. He is considered the strongest chess player the Philippines produced and has been a Board 1 player for the Philippines in 18 World Chess Olympiads.
A Lifetime Achievement Awardee in the 2017 PSA Annual Awards, he remains an active player and put in a strong performance in the 42nd Chess Olympiad in Baku in 2016.
Those interested in joining the simultaneous exhibitions and Torre’s seminar may contact the IPCA and/or follow them on Facebook (@IpcaChess)./PN
