ILOILO City – There’s a call for a month-long recognition of teachers beyond the traditional World Teachers’ Day, urging businesses to extend discounts and perks to educators throughout October.
In a resolution passed by the City Council, business establishments are encouraged to voluntarily offer special privileges from October 3 to 31, 2025, to teachers and education support staff in both public and private schools.
“Teachers are our modern-day heroes. They serve as second parents to their students, dedicating time and effort to nurture future generations. This resolution is a way of honoring their commitment and sacrifice,” said Jelma Crystel Implica, Sangguniang Kabataan Federation president of Iloilo City.
Implica stressed that the gesture is more than symbolic: “It’s important for us, as a community, to acknowledge that teachers shape lives every single day. By encouraging establishments to give back through discounts or promotions, we are fostering a culture of gratitude.”
World Teachers’ Day is observed every October 5 under a United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) declaration. Iloilo City’s move seeks to prolong the commemoration, giving educators nearly a full month to enjoy the benefits.
The measure clarifies that participation by businesses will be voluntary, with establishments free to decide the scope of discounts or promotions they can reasonably sustain.
“We want this to be collaborative, not burdensome. Even small discounts can send a powerful message of appreciation,” Implica added./PN
