Colombia – Police said they have foiled an attempt to assassinate the former head of the now demobilized rebels Rodrigo Londoño Echeverri – better known as Timochenko.

They added two would-be assassins were intercepted on a road in the west of Colombia on Saturday and were killed.

Dissident rebels had ordered Timochenko killed, police said.

Timochenko, who was the highest commander of the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC) when a peace deal was signed in 2016, now heads the FARC political party, which preserved its Spanish initials after changing its name to the Revolutionary Alternative Common Force.(BBC)
