ILOILO City – To mark International Women’s Day today, the Commission on Elections (Comelec) in this city is conducting a special registration for women voters and young girls for the Sangguniang Kabataan.

According to Atty. Reiner Layson, city election officer, a satellite registration point will be set up at the Half-Moon Drive covered walkway of Central Philippine University in Jaro district from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

“We call on women and the girls to register as voters. This is Comelec’s way of advancing, highlighting and promoting the rights of women and girls in politics and governance, most especially in the selection of our country’s leaders,” said Layson.

No less Ilongga Comelec commissioner Ma. Rowena Guanzon, a feminist, pushed for the special registration, revealed Layson.

Under Comelec Resolution No. 10175 issued on Feb. 27, 2017 off-site registrations may be held in public and private hospitals and schools in highly-urbanized cities today.

Under the law, high school (grades 9, 10, 11 and 12) and college students or any other individual of the same age who are residents of this city are qualified to register and participate in the forthcoming Oct. 23, 2017 barangay and SK elections.

Those 15 to 17 years of age on the day of the election are qualified to register and vote in the SK election while those 18 years of age and above on the day of the elections are qualified to register and vote in the barangay election as regular voters.

Those who wish to register in the special satellite registration centers are advised to bring a machine-copy of their birth certificates, student or employee identification cards with date of birth or any other competent proof of identification reflecting their personal details and circumstances, including their dates of birth.

Meanwhile, for women who wish to apply for the change of their names and civil status due to marriage, they will be requested to present and attach a copy of their marriage certificates./PN
