ROXAS City – A police officer was killed after his motorcycle collided with an oncoming 10-wheeler truck at around 4:40 a.m. yesterday, October 3, in Sitio Ilawod, Barangay Bolo here.
Roxas City police identified the victim as Patrolman Nestor Vegas, a resident of the city’s Barangay Libas and assigned to the 1st Aklan Provincial Mobile Force Company.
Vegas sustained severe body injuries and was declared dead on arrival at the hospital.
The truck driver, meanwhile, was identified as Rodel Avelino Sr., who was accompanied by four truck helpers at the time of the accident.
In an interview with Avelino and his helpers, they said they noticed the motorcycle swerving erratically from a distance.
Further reports indicated that Vegas was returning to Roxas City from a nearby municipality when the collision occurred while the truck was en route to Sara, Iloilo.
Police added that according to the witnesses, the motorcycle-riding cop nearly collided with another motorcycle but the rider swerved to avoid it, leading to the fatal crash.
Avelino is now under the custody of the Roxas City Police Station for proper disposition.
The company owning the 10-wheeler truck has also stated its readiness to address the situation, pledging to take responsibility should evidence prove that his driver was at fault in the accident./PN
