ILOILO City – Dengue cases in the first quarter of the year have decreased.
Sixty-six cases were recorded this year — 26 in January, 27 in February and seven as of March 13 — City Health Office (CHO) data showed.
In the same period last year the CHO recorded 183 cases — 79 in January, 53 in February and 51 in March.
CHO assistant chief Dr. Mae Delmo credited the city government’s anti-dengue drive for the decrease in cases.
“We have intensified the advocacy and preventive measures by giving out free larvaecide in all barangays, and everyone is committed to preventing the mosquito population [from increasing],” said Delmo.
She also advised the public to be vigilant with dengue especially that it seldom rains now.
“Expect that breeding places will be there. The garbage should be disposed of properly. Get rid of water in cans and bottles, and clean the gutter,” Delmo said. “Fighting dengue should be everyone’s responsibility.”
Moreover Mayor Jed Patrick Mabilog encouraged residents not to be complacent and to continue cleanup activities in barangays, particularly the regular Do Day every Saturday.
Dengue is caused by day-biting mosquitoes Aedes aegypti and Aedes albopictus that breed in stagnant water.
Aedes aegypti is referred as the primary vector that can be found in urbanized areas. It usually rests in cool, dark corners of the house.
On the other hand, Aedes albopictus is the secondary type of vector that can be found in rural areas and breeds in containers.
Dengue symptoms include fever, abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea. (With Iloilo City PIO/PN)
