MANILA – The Department of Education (DepEd) has made an “aggressive” recommendation to the Office of the President to end the school year 2024-2025 by March 2025.

According to Assistant Secretary Francis Cesar Bringas, the move was made due to the clamor for a quick reversion to the old June to March calendar.

“In response to the recent clamor for a more immediate reversion to the April-May school break, the department has already submitted a letter to the Office of the President presenting other options including a more aggressive alternative of ending SY 2024-2025 in March 2025,” Bringas said.

Bringas added that the DepEd recognized some sectors who had cited the heat in clamoring for the immediate reversion to the April and May School break.

DepEd’s move came after Senate President Juan Miguel Zubiri has urged them and the Commission on Higher Education (CHED) for the immediate return to the June to March academic calendar for school year 2024-2025.

According to the senator, the “almost unbearable rise in temperature” and the recurring cancellation of face-to-face classes are “compelling reasons” to revert to the old school calendar.

“Aside from exposing our students and teachers to the dangers of extreme heat, I honestly believe that the prevailing weather conditions during summer are not conducive to learning,” Zubiri said.

The DepEd earlier said that they are planning for the gradual return to the old school calendar, but this could not be rushed as teachers and learner also need to rest./PN
