BACOLOD City – The Negros Island Police Regional Office (NIPRO) will be fully activated today. Department of Interior and Local Government (DILG) Secretary Juanito Victor Remulla will lead the activation ceremony at the Convention Hall of Acacia Hotel in this city.
In a press conference yesterday, Police Colonel Joeresty Coronica, director of the Bacolod City Police Office (BCPO), said Philippine National Police chief General Rommel Francisco Marbil is also expected to grace the event along with Negros Island Region’s chief executives.
Once NIPRO is activated, the BCPO and Negros Occidental Police Provincial Office will automatically be under it and the Negros Oriental and Siquijor police offices will also be detached from Police Regional Office 7 to join NIPRO, added Coronica.
The Negros Island police office is situated at the Information Technology Center inside NOCPPO headquarters in Camp Alfredo Montelibano Sr., Barangay Estefania here.
Coronica, however, said that as of this writing, NIPRO’s director and deputy directors for administration and operations were yet to be named.
Last week, the Police Regional Office 6 (PRO-6) said that the establishment of the NIPRO would result in the transfer of the BCPO and NOCPPO from Western Visayas.
But the impact on PRO-6 operations is expected to be minimal, according to PRO-6 spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Arnel Solis.
He said the changes would be primarily administrative, involving the reassignment of personnel, with little disruption to current operations.
On June 13, 2024, President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. signed into law the Negros Island Region (NIR) Act, creating a new administrative region comprising the provinces of Negros Occidental, including the highly-urbanized Bacolod City, Negros Oriental and Siquijor.
The NIR Act separates Negros Occidental and Bacolod City from Region 6, and Negros Oriental and Siquijor from Region 7./PN
