BACOLOD City – The city government offered jobs to displaced vendors in the Bacolod City Public Plaza.
On Aug. 19, the City Legal Office ordered the removal of 27 plaza vendors.
The city government wants to make the plaza “vendor free.”
“The displaced vendors will be given a chance to work for the city government,” said Mayor Evelio Leonardia.
The vendors were offered to be casual employees who can sell at the Market Vendor’s Plaza at the Reclamation Area.
But Terry Cortes, one of the displaced vendors, said they want to go back to the plaza and sell as ambulant vendors.
Leonardia said he is open for negotiations and said, “Kun gusto ta nga amo na, ubrahon ta sang insakto.”
The city government plans to rehabilitate the plaza – improvement of lights, fountain and sound system, among others – Leonardia said.
The city government is also talking to the Diocese of Bacolod, which owns part of the plaza area.
“Everything will be finalized after we talk with the church,” said Leonardia./PN
