MANILA – Driver’s licenses will be valid for five years once President Rodrigo Duterte signs the bill providing for the validity extension.
Congress ratified the “Act Extending the Validity Period of Driver’s Licenses” on May 31 and sent it to Malacañang on July 11.
Grace Poe, chairwoman of the Senate public services committee.
Currently, driver’s licenses are valid for only three years.
Poe said her committee will work closely with the LTO and the Department of Transportation in drafting the implementing rules and regulations.
Under the measure, first-time driver’s license applicants shall apply in person at any LTO office, while the LTO must create an online process for driver’s license renewal.
Anyone who misrepresent, connive with an officer, falsify documents, and cheat during the examination for driver’s license acquisition shall be fined P20,000 and prohibited from applying for two years, the bill stated.
At the Senate, authors of the measure include Senate President Pro-Tempore Ralph Recto, Richard Gordon, Joseph Victor Ejercito, and Joel Villanueva./PN
