DRUNK DRIVING, NO HELMETS: Fatal motorcycle crash claims one life, injures two

DUEÑAS, Iloilo – A deadly motorcycle collision in Barangay Capuling has once again highlighted the fatal consequences of drunk driving and the failure to wear helmets, as one man was killed and two others injured late Monday night.

The incident occurred around 9:50 p.m. on May 19. A Yamaha NMAX motorcycle driven by 33-year-old “Marko”, reportedly under the influence of alcohol, sideswiped a Bajaj motorcycle along a provincial road in Dueñas. The impact caused both motorcycles to crash, throwing the riders onto the pavement.

“Marko”, a resident of Barangay Calacaan, sustained severe head injuries and was rushed to the Don Valerio Memorial District Hospital in Passi City, where he was declared dead on arrival at 10:15 p.m.

The Bajaj motorcycle was driven by 20-year-old “Rem”, with 18-year-old “Junjun” as backrider. Both are construction workers from Barangays Anjawan and Poblacion B, respectively.

“Rem” suffered a hand injury while “Junjun” sustained abrasions across his back and body.

According to Police Corporal Regienald Lawague of the Dueñas Municipal Police Station, none of the riders were wearing helmets at the time of the crash. Investigators believe this lack of protective gear significantly worsened the impact of the collision.

Authorities confirmed that “Marko” had been drinking prior to the incident.

“Rem”, the Bajaj driver, may face charges of reckless imprudence resulting in homicide if the family of the deceased decides to pursue legal action./PN
