What to expect in Defensor’s 6th SOPA today

ILOILO City – Different people have different expectations vis-à-vis the scheduled sixth State of the Province Address (SOPA) of Iloilo’s Gov. Arthur Defensor Sr.

Santa Barbara’s Mayor Dennis Superficial expects the governor to update the public on the achievements of his administration, especially in relief operations in Iloilo’s northern towns that were badly damaged by super typhoon “Yolanda” (international name: Haiyan).

Superficial lauded the governor yesterday for upholding transparency in governance and fighting graft and corruption.

“When it comes to the outstanding performance of the governor, there is no question about it,” said Superficial. “He is a recipient of the Seal of Good Housekeeping and Good Governance awards from the Department of Interior and Local Government.”

Like Superficial, Calinog’s Mayor Alex Centena expects the governor to report on relief operations and rehabilitation of typhoon-affected residents.

Both Superficial and Centena are political allies of the governor.

Maasin’s Mayor Mariano Malones, though belonging to the opposition camp, expressed positive thoughts on the hard work that the governor has already done in pouring out more support to all local government units regardless of political affiliation.

“Without the support of the provincial government, our Internal Revenue Allotment would not be sufficient to finance local projects and programs,” he said.

Malones cited the continuing advocacy of the governor on transparency in governance.

Reached for her comment, Provincial Board member Ninfa Garin of the 1st District said she would comment on the SOPA after hearing it.

On the other hand, common people also have something to say. Lina Deocampo of Lemery, Iloilo expressed optimism that the governor would “walk his talk.”

Basta tumanon ‘ya lang tanan nga ginhambal ‘ya, labi na para sa kaayuhan sang pumoluyo,” said Deocampo.

Deocampo said she wanted governor to continue the campaign against illegal drugs and help those in need./PN
