ILOILO City – In a landmark declaration, the Philippine Army has confirmed that Western and Central Visayas regions are now free from the influence of communist terrorist groups (CTGs).
This milestone signals a turning point in the region’s journey toward sustained peace and security, said Major General Marion Sison, commanding general of the Army’s 3rd Infantry Division (3ID).
He reported that all CTG fronts in Panay Island have been dismantled, with preparations underway to officially categorize the region under Stable Internal Peace and Security (SIPS).
“This achievement highlights the success of our counter-insurgency efforts. No areas remain under CTG influence or threat,” Sison said.
He also pointed out the absence of extortion schemes, such as “permit to campaign” or “permit to win,” as the nation gears up for the upcoming elections.
However, Sison issued a stern warning to politicians, emphasizing that any form of collaboration with CTGs would have dire consequences.
“Supporting these groups is political suicide. It will not only tarnish your reputation but also jeopardize your career,” he stressed.
The municipality of Calinog, Iloilo which was previously classified as a red area of concern due to CTG activities, has also been declared free of such threats.
Brigadier General Michael Samson of the Philippine Army’s 301st Brigade attributed this development to a series of encounters in August 2023, which resulted in the neutralization of the Central Front.
“We recommend reclassifying Calinog from red to yellow, as there is no longer any significant threat from the New People’s Army in the area,” Samson said.
The declaration of a CTG-free status underscores the importance of vigilance and sustained efforts in maintaining peace in the region. Authorities continue to call for the active cooperation of local governments, residents, and political candidates to ensure that the gains achieved are not reversed./PN
