MANILA – Barangay Ginebra San Miguel Kings dominated from start to finish over GlobalPort Batang Pier 124-108 in the Oppo PBA Governors’ Cup last night at the Smart-Araneta Coliseum.
LA Tenorio top-scored with 29 points, including five 3-pointers, for Kings (1-1). Import Justin Brownlee added 21 points while Greg Slaughter chipped in 19.
In the first game, NLEX Road Warriors registered its fourth consecutive win in as many outings after a come-from-behind 95-91 victory against Phoenix Fuel Masters.
Leading 29-28 at the end of the opening quarter, Kings pulled away in the second quarter on inside hits by Slaughter and outside baskets by Tenorio, Brownlee and Joe Devance for a 61-51 halftime edge.
The lead further swelled in the second half. Tenorio and Slaughter hit strides to build their largest lead in the match 107-82 on back-to-back layups by Brownlee.
In the other game, NLEX hanged on to the coattails of Phoenix almost the entire game until it unloaded a decisive 11-5 scoring run behind Carlo Lastimosa and Alex Mallari in the final five minutes to snatch the victory.
Road Warriors was down 68-78 when Lastimosa drained consecutive jumpers to knot the count at 82-all on a split free throw by JR Quinahan. Mallari rose to the occasion with conversions to push NLEX for good.
Import Aaron Fuller led the way with 18 points while Mallari and Lastimosa each had 14 points for NLEX./PN
