MANILA – The JP Voltes Football Club dealt Global Football Club its first defeat in the 2016 United Football League, sweeping 2-0 on Wednesday night at the Rizal Memorial Football Stadium.
Masaki Yanagawa and Takashi Odawara fired a goal each to lead the way for JP Voltes, which moved up to solo second place in the standings with 35 points on a 11-4-2 win-loss-draw slate.
The JP Voltes were aggressive to start the match as Odawara had three quick attempts on the goal but was defended by Global’s Patrick Deyto. Misagh Bahadoran and Ivan Petrovic of Global also had their chances but were foiled by the defense.
With them controlling the pace, Bahadoran had two more shots on the goal but failed to connect. In the 37th mark of the opening half, the JP Voltes gained a 1-0 lead on a header by Yanagawa from a pass by Yu Hoshide.
Global had their chances to tie the match before the half-time break but two attempts by Bahadoran were quickly blocked by the defense of the JP Voltes.
However, problems compounded for Global in the second half as their keeper Deyto was stretchered out after being clipped by Odawara. Minutes later, Bahadoran was sent off with a red card for hitting JP Voltes keeper Nelson Gasic.
Tensions heated up for both teams late in the match as JP Voltes’ Alexandro Elnar and Robert Canedo and Global’s Jerry Barbaso were booked yellow cards. In the 90th mark, JP Voltes sealed the win with a Odawara goal from a pass by Takumi Uesato.
Meanwhile, Iloilo City’s Stallion Gilligan’s Football Club (7-3-6) moved up to sixth place in the standings with a default victory over cellar-dwelling Forza-Alabang Football Club (4-12-1)./PN
