MANILA – The national government will spend P15 billion for the rehabilitation of the conflict-torn Marawi City.
A P10-billion funding for reconstruction in Marawi was included in the proposed 2018 national budget that President Rodrigo Duterte remitted to Congress, according to Rep. Johnny Pimentel.
This is on top of the P5 billion from the contingent fund of the 2017 national budget and the quick recovery funds from various agencies under Task Force Bangon Marawi, said Pimentel, a member of the House appropriations committee.
Duterte is “absolutely determined to reestablish and renew Marawi, and we are all for it. This is our ‘Marshall Plan’ for the city,” Pimentel said, alluding to a United States-initiated aid to revive European economies after World War II.
“All of the city’s damaged structures will be restored, including homes, schools, places of worship, hospitals, public markets, roads, and bridges,” he said.
“The city’s electricity, water and telecommunications services will also be fixed and improved,” he added.
Pimentel belied reports that Philippine Amusement and Gaming Corp. funds will be used for Marawi rehabilitation.
The P10-billion funding will be taken from the 2018 National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Fund (NDRRMF), he clarified.
“The NDRRMF for 2018 was purposely bumped up to P25.5 billion from P15.7 billion this year to provide for the extra P10 billion,” said Pimentel.
On June 28, Duterte issued Administrative Order No. 3 creating an interagency task force “for the recovery, reconstruction and rehabilitation” of Marawi, the Muslim-majority capital of Lanao del Sur province./PN
