ILOILO City – A drug surrenderee was wounded after exchanging gunshots with a police officer yesterday in Barangay San Miguel, Jordan, Guimaras.
The 31-year-old John Robert Ronzales of Barangay Poblacion, Jordan was hit on the stomach and legs. He was being treated at the Western Visayas Medical Center in Mandurriao district as of this writing.
Ronzales turned himself in to the police last year as part of Oplan Double Barrel, the government’s intensified antidrug campaign, according to Chief Inspector Shella Marie Sardoma, Jordan police chief.
Jordan had 153 drug surrenderees.
“He (Ronzales) was supposed to attend a transformation program for drug surrenderees today at the Jordan gym,” Sardoma said yesterday.
But an armed Ronzales annoyed customers and made a scene at Night Spot videoke bar around 1:20 a.m. yesterday, Sardoma said, citing a phone call their station received.
Police Officer 1 Peter Gange responded and found Ronzales.
Gange introduced himself as a policeman and told the latter to drop his weapon – a .45-caliber pistol – and surrender.
Instead of heeding the officer, Ronzales fired at the former four times, but missed. Gange then fired back, investigation showed.
Aside from Ronzales’ firearm, four empty shells from a .45 pistol and seven from a .9mm pistol were found at the shooting site.
Officers were currently guarding Ronzales, who was facing charges for attempted homicide and illegal possession of firearm./PN
