CAPIZ – Howard Guintu has been officially proclaimed as the new representative of the 1st District of Capiz, defeating Paolo Roxas – great-grandson of former President Manuel A. Roxas and son of former senator and Interior Secretary Mar Roxas – in a closely watched congressional race.

The Commission on Elections (Comelec) proclaimed Guintu on Tuesday afternoon, May 13. This marks his first term as a congressman.

Representing the Pinatatag na Ugnayan para sa mga Oportunidad sa Pabahay ng Masa (Pinuno) Partylist, Guintu secured 130,531 votes, surpassing Roxas’ 108,240 votes.

He recorded strong leads in the municipalities of Pontevedra, Pilar, Panay, Maayon, and President Roxas.

Here’s the official breakdown of his votes:

*Roxas City – 43,344

*Maayon – 16,613

*Panay – 17,701

*Panitan – 10,650

*Pilar – 16,415

*Pontevedra – 14,690

*President Roxas – 11,118

His camp described the win as a hard-earned victory, especially considering the backing Paolo Roxas received from the influential ‘One Capiz’ political group led by Gov. Fredenil H. Castro and re-elected Roxas City’s Mayor Ronnie Dadivas./PN
