House approves P200 minimum wage hike

MANILA – The House of Representatives approved the proposal to increase the daily minimum wage for private sector workers by P200 during its third and final reading on Wednesday night, June 4.

The measure, which garnered 171 votes in favor, no votes against, and one abstention, offers a higher wage increase than the P100 approved by the Senate months ago.

The House and the Senate will have to reconcile the differences in a bicameral conference committee before transmitting the enrolled bill to Malacañang for President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr.’s signature to become a law.

The House and the Senate have until June 13, the last session day of the 19th Congress, to reconcile their differing versions and ratify the reconciled version for the bill to be ready for the President’s signature or the bill has to be refiled next Congress.

Meanwhile, President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr. is expected to look into the economic implications of the proposed increase in the minimum wage hike for workers.

According to Presidential Communications Office’s Undersecretary Claire Castro, the Chief Executive wants to provide what’s best for the Filipino workers.

“’Nais ng Pangulo na maibigay kung ano ang makakabuti sa manggagawang Pilipino,” Castro said in a media briefing at the Malacañang Palace on Thursday morning./PN
