ILOILO – As extreme weather displaces thousands across the province, the Iloilo Provincial Health Office (PHO) has launched a full-scale emergency response while simultaneously enhancing its mental health support systems to protect Ilonggos on all fronts.

Following the recent onslaught of tropical cyclones “Crising”, “Dante” and “Emong” and the intensified southwest monsoon, over 8,000 individuals have been reported affected. In response, the PHO’s Health Emergency Response Teams (HERTs) have been mobilized in coordination with Rural Health Units (RHUs) to deliver vital on-site medical services, distribute hygiene kits and medicines, and provide leptospirosis prophylaxis for those exposed to floodwaters.

“Even during the suspension of government work, our health units remained open to ensure uninterrupted medical consultations, maternal care, and access to emergency medicines,” the PHO said.

The provincial health agency, a key member of the Iloilo Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council, activated its Operations Center (OpCen) for real-time incident monitoring and support for local government units (LGUs). Situation reports continue to be relayed to the Department of Health’s Western Visayas Center for Health Development.

In addition to physical health response, the Iloilo Health Board is intensifying efforts to address the province’s growing mental health needs. A roundtable discussion recently gathered partner agencies and stakeholders to review the latest data and propose targeted interventions.

Topics included the results of the HEEADSSS Assessment from the Department of Education–Iloilo Division, updates on community-based mental health programs from the Archdiocese of Jaro, and a proposed Iloilo Mental Health Referral System to streamline access to care.

The forum also tackled PhilHealth’s Outpatient Mental Health Benefit Package and reviewed scorecard indicators under the Local Health System framework, identifying gaps and areas of improvement.

Vice Governor and SP Health Committee Chair Nathalie Ann Debuque expressed her firm support, saying the initiative reflects a unified and compassionate response to a silent yet urgent public health issue.

The province’s Mental Health, Neurologic, and Substance Abuse Program is being strengthened through partnerships with the World Health Organization Philippines, DOH-WVCHD, Unilab Foundation, the Philippine Psychiatric Society, the DepEd Iloilo Division, and the Philippine League Against Epilepsy, among others.

Residents in need of health assistance are advised to contact their LGU emergency hotlines or visit the nearest health center. Free Doxycycline for leptospirosis prevention is available at RHUs.

“As we face both environmental and emotional storms, we urge every Ilonggo to take proactive steps for their safety and mental well-being,” the PHO added./PN
