ILOILO – The Iloilo Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (PDRRMO) has raised heightened alerts as Super Typhoon “Nando” enters the country, warning that while the storm may not directly hit the province, its powerful winds and the risk of landslides could endanger lives in vulnerable areas.

Joerey Porras, supervisor of the Iloilo Provincial Civil Defense Operations Center (OpCen), said close monitoring is underway in high-risk municipalities.

“To enhance our response efforts, we are closely monitoring the status of 42 municipalities and Passi City across the province. Local governments units (LGUs) are providing regular updates regarding their current situations, which allows us to assess any emerging risks effectively. Particularly, we are paying close attention to landslide-prone areas, which include Alimodian, Maasin, and Tubungan,” Porras said.

These areas, he added, are equipped with an early warning system specifically designed for landslide detection.

“Our early warning landslide committees are active and routinely gather information about the conditions in these areas, relaying critical data back to the provincial office,” said Porras.

PDRRMO confirmed that Barangay Boloc in Tubungan has already been placed under Alert Level 3, prompting preeemptive safety measures by local officials.

As a precaution, classes in 30 schools across the province have also been suspended.

Porras urged residents to heed advisories and prepare for possible preemptive evacuations.

“Mag aligmat sila from time to time kay ang hangin mabaskog. Kag kon kinahanglan mag pre-emptive evacuation, mag pre-empt sila para sa ila safety kag mamati gid sa radyo,” he stressed.

He emphasized that families should head to designated evacuation zones before conditions worsen and ensure their safety needs are met.

“It’s important to find a safe shelter that meets the needs of everyone in the family, including pets,” he said.

Residents were also advised to prepare “go bags” containing non-perishable food, drinking water, medicines, and other essentials.

The PDRRMO assured the public that its multi-role responders — including supervisors, radio operators, IT support staff, K9 units, drivers, and drone operators — are on standby to provide immediate response as “Nando” intensifies.

“PDRRMO Multi-Role Responders are on their daily routine standby, closely monitoring current events and weather updates, prepared to respond at any moment,” OpCen said in a statement.
