Iloilo police issues election safety guide

ILOILO – With more than 1.6 million registered voters expected to troop to polling precincts on May 12, the Iloilo Police Provincial Office (IPPO) has issued a public safety advisory aimed at ensuring peaceful, secure, and orderly conduct of the national and local elections.

The province-wide guidance, released on May 1, comes as the Commission on Elections (Comelec) targets a voter turnout exceeding 75 percent for both Iloilo City and province, prompting authorities to anticipate heavy voter turnout and potential security risks.

“Follow these safety tips to make your voting experience smooth and secure. Remember, your safety is just as important as your vote,” the IPPO reminded voters.

Below are the key safety reminders from IPPO:

1. Know Your Precinct Early – Voters are advised to verify their polling place and precinct number ahead of election day by using the Comelec precinct finder at https://precinctfinder.comelec.gov.ph. Doing so can prevent last-minute confusion and overcrowding.

2. Vote Early – Arrive at voting centers early to avoid long queues. Comelec has designated 5 a.m. to 7 a.m. as exclusive voting hours for senior citizens, pregnant women, and persons with disabilities (PWDs), including one companion, provided they belong to the same precinct.

3. Bring Valid ID – A government-issued ID will help facilitate faster verification, especially in cases where voters encounter issues with the official list.

4. Stay Alert – The public is urged to remain vigilant and immediately report any suspicious persons or activities to police personnel assigned at the polling centers.

5. Avoid Political Arguments – Voters should refrain from engaging in political discussions or confrontations inside or near voting areas to maintain a calm environment.

6. No Weapons, No Alcohol – A strict liquor ban will be enforced from May 11 to 12 in line with Comelec Resolution No. 11057. Carrying firearms or deadly weapons is also prohibited throughout the election period unless expressly authorized by Comelec.

7. Respect Election Officials – Cooperation with election officers is vital. Voters are reminded to follow instructions and observe patience as the voting process progresses.

8. Leave the Premises Calmly After Voting – Avoid loitering around polling stations after casting votes to ensure orderly surroundings and smooth foot traffic.

IPPO director Colonel Bayani Razalan assured the public of their preparedness for election day, citing finalized security plans and sufficient police deployment across the province.

“We are very much ready for the elections and are just polishing the final troop deployment,” Razalan said.

The May 12 vote will cover both national and local races, with officials hoping for high voter participation across Iloilo’s voting population of 1,649,730./PN
