ILOILO – The Tigum-Aganan Watershed Management Board (TAWMB) adopted a scorecard to assess the current environmental health of the watershed.

A watershed report card helps to target and create a more resilient environment that adopt well to disturbances and disasters, said Susan Jovero, TAWMB Technical Working Group chair.

The Tigum-Aganan Watershed is composed of two main waterways – the Tigum River and the Aganan River.

Each river is considered to be sub-watersheds which converge in Pavia town to form the Jaro River that flows through Iloilo City to the Sulu Sea at the Iloilo Strait.

TAWMB held a governing board meeting in Pavia recently.

“Measuring helps us better understand our watersheds,” said, Jovero.

The scorecard can help the stakeholders focus their efforts where they are need most and to track the progress made.

“It also helps us identify ecologically important areas that require protection or enhancement,” said Jovero.

The Watershed Report Card template is to be used as a guideline for communicating the health or condition of watershed using environmental indicators.

 The six watershed health indicators are the following:

* natural cover

* biodiversity

* water

* agriculture and land-use

* waste management, and

* watershed governance.

Jovero said each indicator has two or more specific parameters and measure to help describe watershed condition. (PIA-Iloilo/PN)
