ILOILO – After decades of living in darkness, more than 2,100 households in remote island barangays of northern Iloilo will soon be linked to the power grid through a P150-million interconnection project that promises to transform daily life and open the door to long-awaited development.
The Concepcion–Tago–Tambaliza–Naborot Interconnection Line Extension Project, touted as one of the country’s biggest rural electrification efforts, will energize Tambaliza, Macatunao, and Talotu-an in Concepcion, as well as Barangay Naborot in San Dionisio.
Iloilo Electric Cooperative III (ILECO III) general manager Atty. James Balsomo II said the impact goes beyond infrastructure.
“This is more than just putting up poles and wires — it’s about finally giving these communities the same opportunities for progress as those on the mainland. With electricity, students can study longer hours, families can live more comfortably, and small businesses can grow,” Balsomo said.
The project was initiated through funding secured by former 5th District congressman Raul Tupas and is now being carried out under the leadership of Cong. Binky April Tupas. For residents who have long relied on kerosene lamps and costly generator sets, the development is considered a game-changer.
With power supply soon available, islanders can expect not only better education and digital connectivity but also safer streets and enhanced livelihood options such as refrigeration for fish catch and other perishable goods.
ILECO III, recently recognized nationally for its performance in rural electrification, views the project as its most meaningful contribution yet.
“The real measure of success is when children can switch on a light to study, when health centers can use equipment, and when families no longer feel isolated because of lack of electricity,” Balsomo added.
Once completed, the interconnection project will mark a historic milestone for Iloilo’s 5th District — signaling the end of decades of waiting and the beginning of brighter futures for thousands of families./PN
