Japan hikes loan aid to fortify 2 PH bridges

MANILA – Filipino and Japanese officials on Thursday exchanged diplomatic notes to enable Japanese loan support for the strengthening of two bridges in the Philippine capital against earthquakes.

Japan committed to an additional 4.4 billion yen (P2 billion) to the original 9.783 billion yen (P4.5 billion) fortification of the Lambingan and Guadalupe bridges.

Foreign affairs secretary Teodoro Locsin Jr. and his Japanese counterpart, Motegi Toshimitsu, led the exchange of notes. Locsin thanked Japan for its continued support to the Philippines infrastructure and peace development projects.

Japan, like the Philippines, is located on “Pacific Ring of Fire” that is prone to earthquakes and volcanic eruptions.

The two top diplomats also discussed the West Philippine Sea during their first bilateral meeting. (ABS-CBN News)
