ILOILO City – The Land Transportation Office (LTO) in Western Visayas has issued a stern warning to drivers against drinking and driving during the highlights of the Dinagyang Festival on January 25 and 26.
Regional Director Gaudioso Geduspan emphasized the importance of public safety during the celebration and announced that the agency has acquired four calibrated breath analyzers to detect drivers under the influence of alcohol.
Drivers caught violating the Anti-Drunk and Drugged Driving Act of 2013 (Republic Act 10586) will face severe penalties.
These include monetary fines depending on the severity of the offense and possible permanent revocation of driver’s licenses for repeat offenders or those involved in road accidents.
Geduspan confirmed that breath analyzers are calibrated yearly for accuracy and will be used to test alcohol levels in suspected drunk drivers.
In 2021, the Department of Transportation (DOTr) provided 25 breath analyzers to LTO Region 6, of which 19 were sent for recalibration and six were deemed defective.
Currently, only four calibrated units are operational. Geduspan has initiated efforts to retrieve the recalibrated units promptly.
Likewise, Geduspan announced plans for 24-hour operations during the festival in coordination with the Iloilo City Government’s Command Center to ensure prompt responses to road crashes.
LTO-6 is conducting training and deputization seminars for police officers in collaboration with the Philippine National Police (PNP) to enhance the enforcement of sobriety laws.
Suspected intoxicated drivers will undergo the following tests Field Sobriety Tests, which include walk-and-turn, one-leg stand, or horizontal gaze nystagmus tests.
An alcohol breathalyzer test aims to measure blood alcohol concentration (BAC).
Drivers exceeding the legal BAC limit will face arrest, fines, and other penalties.
Geduspan urged festival attendees to avoid driving while intoxicated and opt for public transportation or designated drivers to ensure a safe and enjoyable Dinagyang Festival experience.
He stressed that The LTO-6 remains committed to ensuring road safety and reducing alcohol-related incidents during one of Iloilo City’s most celebrated events./PN
