TWO days after Maine Mendoza came to the defense of her husband, actor-politician Arjo Atayde, over alleged involvement with contractors Sarah and Curlee Discaya, the TV host-actress reminded the public to be mindful of the “three sides to every story.”
In a lengthy statement on her Facebook page on Wednesday, Sept. 10, Mendoza reiterated her “need to speak out immediately” in defense of Atayde as someone aware of his side, while apologizing for “speaking up again.”
“I know it may be wiser to stay silent while the investigation is ongoing, but I cannot let my last tweet be my only statement,” she said.
“I am well aware of the accusations, criticisms, and judgments being thrown at my husband, me, and our family. After being bombarded with vile remarks the past 48 hours, I will not pretend they don’t sting, but I will also not allow lies to define who we are,” she continued.
The “Eat Bulaga” host said that “not a single part of [their] life was built on taxpayers’ money,” and that their finances came from years of “work and savings.” She also pointed out that she and Atayde, as well as their respective families, are “financially capable of sustaining” their lives.
Touching on the issue of Atayde allegedly soliciting money from the Discayas’ firm, Mendoza stated that the actor “never stole and lived off taxpayers’ money” since, according to her, it is not who he truly is.
“I will never accept the narrative that accuses us of stealing and living off taxpayers’ money. That is not who Arjo is, that is not who I am, and that is not who we are — no amount of noise and accusations will ever make it true,” she said.
Mendoza also said that she “will never defend” Atayde if he “were truly guilty.” She nonetheless reiterated that he “never crossed the line” when it comes to stealing.
Out of context
Mendoza also touched on the resurfaced photos of Atayde with the Discayas, as well as the ongoing allegations in her post: “I get that the current allegations, photos taken out of context, and the stories being spread online may look different to some.”
“But let’s not forget that perception is not always reality. Narratives can be twisted so easily, and many are quick to believe what fits their perspective,” she continued. “But the truth always finds its way to light, and that’s what we are holding on to.”
In her statement, she also expressed hope that Atayde’s naysayers would “recognize how harsh and hasty their judgments were” amid the controversy. “
Following the Discayas’ controversial bombshell, Atayde denied the allegations and stressed that he never engaged in any anomalous projects with any contractor. He also stated that he is considering legal action. (Hannah Mallorca © Philippine Daily Inquirer)
