Make it simple

AS THE holiday season approaches, schools across Western Visayas are gearing up for their annual Christmas parties, a cherished tradition that brings students, teachers and parents together to celebrate the spirit of giving and togetherness. The Department of Education (DepEd) Region 6 is encouraging a significant shift in how these celebrations are conducted. Its Regional Memorandum No. 893 emphasizes the importance of keeping school Christmas parties simple yet meaningful, and it introduces a “no collection policy” to ensure that no financial burden is placed on students or their families.

The “no collection policy” is a welcome change that aligns with the principles of inclusivity and responsible spending. Indeed, the holiday season should not become a source of financial stress for families, especially in these challenging economic times. By prohibiting the solicitation of funds or gifts for school holiday festivities, DepEd-6 is sending a clear message – the focus should be on the joy of coming together and sharing, rather than on extravagant spending.

One of the key aspects of this policy is that it does not restrict voluntary sharing by parents or students who can afford it. This distinction is crucial, as it acknowledges that some may be willing and able to contribute without causing hardship. Importantly, it also underlines that students who cannot contribute should not be excluded from participating in these celebrations. This inclusivity is essential to maintain the sense of unity and togetherness that the holiday season represents.

DepEd is also encouraging schools to be eco-conscious by recycling old Christmas decorations, thereby minimizing expenses for parents and students. This eco-friendly approach not only reduces costs but also teaches valuable lessons about sustainability and responsible resource management. By reusing materials like paper and old decorations, schools can create festive environments without the need for excessive spending.

Furthermore, DepEd’s emphasis on holding Christmas parties within the school premises ensures the safety of learners. This is especially important in light of ongoing health concerns. By keeping the celebrations within the controlled school environment, the risk of COVID-19 transmission – yes, it is still very much around – can be minimized, ensuring the well-being of students and staff.

In addition to the regional memorandum, DepEd’s Central Office has issued its own guidelines (DepEd Order No. 052) emphasizing simplicity and meaning in Christmas celebrations within the DepEd community.

As we approach the holiday season, it is important to remember that the essence of Christmas lies in the joy of giving, sharing, and coming together as a community. DepEd’s “no collection policy” and the accompanying guidelines serve as a reminder of these values. By keeping school Christmas parties simple yet meaningful, we can ensure that the true spirit of the season shines through, and that no one is left behind due to financial constraints.
